BYU and Honor Codes broken, 6'9 starter is gone!

Slate's Hang-up and Listen podcast this week featured the dismissal of  BYU starter Brandon Davies for having pre-marital sex with his girlfriend.
Apparently, Brigham Young University, a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints (Mormon belief) based college has a strict honor code relating not only to athletes, but all students enrolled. This honor code includes: Academic honesty, grooming and dress code, abstinence from pre-marital sex, and also a "no-use" policy of drugs and alcohol.
If anyone who attends BYU gets caught using or breaking any of these aspects of honor code, they will be dismissed, period.
I think that it is awesome that they require these students to be responsible, not drinking and becoming abstinent, but it is so hard to believe honestly that a whole college can practice all of these aspects of life looking at the way the world is today.
I also think that the fact that the faculty stuck to their rules and dismissed the player displayed moral character and showed that they would stick to what they said they would do!
I know this situation is controversial, but it shows me that athletes, especially those in the spotlight, have to follow rules, and to take it one step further, people CAN follow these rules, otherwise these athletes and students wouldn't be attending BYU!!!
God bless,
Lauren

  1. I understand the rules set by BYU and their staff and totally agree with them. Not only should rules be stressed but also followed by EVERYONE!!! I do feel that it is hard to survive and set high standards like these in the society that we live in. At time athletes may feel as though the rules don't apply, but this shows first hand that BYU doesn't feel the same no matter whom or what it is.

  2. There need to be rules and boundaries set not to cross in these universities. I understand why BYU has these rules. I just belive it is very unforntunate for a player to lose his rights to play.
