Alcohol and energy drinks... not a great mix.

This is not the easiest subject for me to blog about being as I personally do not drink therefore I have a pre-meditated bias against the topic, nevertheless, it still needs to be heard.
People have been hearing lately about the "Four Loco's" drinks that combine energy drinks and alcohol, and they have been causing problems, especially among college age students nationwide. Slowly, but surely, they are being banned from states, but apparently not quick enough. There have been many deaths from this drink, and also others.
A popular way to also consume alcohol is adding red bull, or a different energy drink of that sort and recently a study has been done to see the difference in people just drinking alcohol and those who also add energy drinks to their beverage.
The study shows that people have enough less control when the "problematic" caffeine is added to their already control ceasing drink. People are overindulging because the caffeine makes them not feel buzzed but confused and over stimulated. They lose sight of what is going on quicker and have a less grasp on what is going on and how much they are in fact drinking.
I think its hard enough for people to drink, but now adding caffeine to alcohol is adding a problem to a problem.
God bless,
Lauren

Tested positive and sudden retirement? Hmmm..

One of the only players in MLB history to fail three drug tests is none other than Manny Ramirez. Star athlete and baseball player who made his debut in 1993 and will forever be in the record books decided to retire this week rather than facing a 100 game suspension.
To quote Slate, "What did Ramirez waste? He was a superb hitter for a long, long time. He retires with 2,574 hits, 1,544 runs, and 555 home-runs. He led the Cleveland Indians to two pennants and the Boston Red Sox to two world championships. He played till he was 38 years old."
He was impressive, he was forceful, and he was determined; He was also  a cheater. To be successful in sports, you have to win fairly. Steroids, or any other type of drug that makes you be someone that you are not is ILLEGAL. If you want to win, develop a strong work ethic, stay longer, sweat more, play harder, don't inject or consume your way to the top by taking this MESS that will not only hurt you in the long run, but demolish your chances of ever truly becoming great, because if you cheat, you will be caught.
He made a stupid decision and he was found out, just like in life, if you try to hide something, you to will be found out. Karma is always there to find what you had done.
Slate said it, he was successful and he was excellent at his sport. Nevertheless, when you think about him in twenty years, you may remember his statistics in baseball, but first you will recall this mistake that ended his career. To read more on the story, check out the following links:

Should college athletes be paid to pay?

This week's Slate's Hang-up and Listens podcast performance went into depth about the ugly win of UConn over Butler. They actually hit the points that this was the worst Field goal percentage of shooting in Final Four history. It went from 8/48 and on shooting inside the three-point line. There were more blocks on peremiter shots then Butler has had to suffer all season. Matt Howard was being talked up a ton by ESPN staff, and he only appeared "okay", nothing impressive.
Both teams went 10/44 in 3-point range, that's 22%, and again, not impressive, at all.
After venturing away from the game, they hit on the point of college athletes recieving monetary compensation for their abilities on the court/field/etc. I personally do not think that college athletes should be paid. Even though playing a sport in college is a job, they are not a professional yet, that is a whole different level. If they are recieving scholarship money, housing, etc. then they are being compensated.
  What do you think?

It hit me why in pageants contestants say, "World Peace" is their main hope!

We have heard about the bombing in Libya that took place this past weekend, but do we really know what is going on across the world when it comes to the possibility of war. I certainly do not know, or quite frankly want to know. It seems as if everyday on the news something is mentioned about the coming of war from anguish that is taking place between two or more countries, and if we are not one of the countries that are involved, then one of the countries that is involved is asking for our help physically or financially.
It breaks my heart to realize that no matter what we do or anyone else does, someone is never going to be happy. Why can we not reach an agreement and create peace among the world?
I read about a U.S. fighter jet crashing with U.S. soldiers on board in Libya this morning. It really hits home when our own people are involved in pain and suffering, but honestly, it is occuring EVERYDAY. When will we realize that tragedy is not only sweeping across our nation, but the world.
I cannot open a newspaper or turn on the television without something coming on about fighting in the middle east or bombing occuring in another country.... WHY CAN'T WE JUST GET ALONG? I know this is a dumb question, but I wish someone would take it literally and stand up and out for change to take place in the world.
It's becoming very real to me that the book of Revelations and the prophesy of Jesus coming back could in fact be in my generation. If you do not know what I'm taking about, pick up a bible and read the last chapter of the book- you will come to the realization as well. It's scary but very true.
Having said all this, the fact of the matter is that the world is in a tough spot, and we need to make some changes, and quickly. Not just in putting peace back in our worrld, but some Jevoah Shalom (God of Peace) in our lives, which is Jesus Christ.

Lauren

Natural or not, it's still a disaster

My heart goes out to Japan and what they and neighboring countries are dealing with right now.
I woke up at three a.m. with a text message from a friend on Friday morning telling me to turn on the news. Sadly enought, I saw that an 8.9 earthquake had taken place and devastation was soon to occur.
I actually went to Japan in 2007 and was able to stay there for ten days with a host family, so the first thing I thought about was them when I heard about the tragedy.
It is actually weird because while I was there in July of 2007, a 6.6 Earthquake took place and also a chemical spill, so I dealt with my fair share of distasters while I was oversea's.
At this point as the death toll is still rising, what we can do as a nation is pray for all those directly or indirectly affected by the disaster. We can also provide a helping hand, whether with materials, monetary gifts, or provide physical help.
God bless!

BYU and Honor Codes broken, 6'9 starter is gone!

Slate's Hang-up and Listen podcast this week featured the dismissal of  BYU starter Brandon Davies for having pre-marital sex with his girlfriend.
Apparently, Brigham Young University, a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints (Mormon belief) based college has a strict honor code relating not only to athletes, but all students enrolled. This honor code includes: Academic honesty, grooming and dress code, abstinence from pre-marital sex, and also a "no-use" policy of drugs and alcohol.
If anyone who attends BYU gets caught using or breaking any of these aspects of honor code, they will be dismissed, period.
I think that it is awesome that they require these students to be responsible, not drinking and becoming abstinent, but it is so hard to believe honestly that a whole college can practice all of these aspects of life looking at the way the world is today.
I also think that the fact that the faculty stuck to their rules and dismissed the player displayed moral character and showed that they would stick to what they said they would do!
I know this situation is controversial, but it shows me that athletes, especially those in the spotlight, have to follow rules, and to take it one step further, people CAN follow these rules, otherwise these athletes and students wouldn't be attending BYU!!!

Trade.. Trade.. Trade.. Ole Carmello!

The knicks are nearly dropping all their roster in order to gain Carmello Anthony to their game... Can you trade four, essentially starters, just to gain one big name player?
This Slate's hangup and listen episode discusses trades and the business side of the NBA.
I liked Carmello Anthony, but quite frankly I don't believe that going after one player knowing that you would have to rid yourself of several crucial players you already have in order to afford this traded player's salary is a little ridiculous.
I understand that trades are going to take place, but when it comes to this point, it makes people not only lose interest in particular teams because they may have supported that team because a specific player that was on the team, but it also makes a watcher/supporter ask themselves about the real facts on the NBA, all it is, is a business.
Carmello is kinda of in the lime light at this point being as he might be put down for this decision..
What do you think? Are trades needed/worth it? What about the point of "working teams for as much money as you can get in order to secure the trade?"
God bless,

Terror in Paradise... Pirates don't only exist in story books

I was getting on the Internet on my office computer and as always breaking news is the first thing that catches my eye being as it's settings are on a comcast news site. The leading story was about four Americans being killed by pirates. I honestly caught myself stop and re-read the headline thinking, "did I just see this right?" I'm not trying to show my "roots" here, but I honestly didn't know that pirates existed in real life. Sure there are movies like "The Little Mermaid" and even non-animated movies such as "Into the Blue" and others that feature thieves in the ocean robbing innocent bystanders and label them as pirates. Nonetheless, I thought it was just a story, not real life.
When I continued reading I was overwhelmed as I realized it was in fact real life, being as four innocent people were killed today.
The four people were on a yacht of the coast of Somalia, and the yacht, the Quest was hijacked on Friday. When a bombing occurred today, SOF Soldiers reached the Quest and found the remains of  the Americans as well as four pirates. In all there were nineteen pirates involved in the tragedy.
Secretary of state Hilary Clinton is wanting the piracy policy to change, especially after this being the most horrific pirate attack to date on Americans.
What do you think should be done in order to increase Americans safety in waters off of our borders?

Obama's plans.. oh my oh my..

A podcast I recently watched on CNN displayed Obama's newsest plans on Budget cuts. He tells us that we are impatient and he is confident that their will be a agreement on budget cuts with the Republicans.... Hmmm..
They go on to say that between the thoughts of Democrats and Republicans, the democrats think that Obama's plans are to lean and Republican's think that they are to fat. What a great analogy!?
I think O'bama needs to quit complaining that we are impatient with him and actually make something happen which will satisfy us and not give us reason to become impatient.
Maybe I'm being harsh, but he has been promising change, change, change and hope, hope, hope, since he was elected into office and I feel like my hope has became hopeless.
They are discussing deep budget cuts on Social security, military spending, and medicare. What money are you exactly going to take away? I'm just confused about the whole situation. I think if something is going to be done, it needs to be done now... We have given him over two years, he needs to give us what he promised, hope and change.

Injuries change your tomorrow

Slate's Hang-up and Listen really is an interesting podcast. If you have never listened to a segment and enjoy sports, I reccommend you check one out.
Yet again, My A.D.D kicks in as I listen to one of these podcasts. My mind always tend to focus in on one specific point they hit on, and this one happens to be injuries.
Of course, while writing the blogs, my personality always tends  to kick in as I type up my opinion's and overviews of these podcasts, Jesus always seems to be the basis of opinion.
In this particular segment, they discuss the impact of injuries on teams, and specifically the hit that Ben Roethlisburger took after throwing an interception. He wasn't the same the rest of the super bowl. It makes you realize, that's all it takes to be done with the game is once second to change everything! One tackle, one messed up throw, one quick cut, one fall, one run, your whole career could end in one play.
Kinda scary isn't it? All your preparation you take in order to build muscle mass, to perfect your throwing, your free throw, your jump shot; making sure every exit out of track blocks is on time and smooth, gliding over each hurdle without stuttering, masteting all skills would be pointless, because of one moment that shattered all your hard work. It could happen, that quick.
Don't take anything for granted, be thankful for what you have, and enjoy it while you have it! Sports are wonderful! They encourage confidence, fun, demonstrate hard-work ethics, display passion, create chemistry, but at the end of the day its just a game. You always need a back-up plan. Don't lean on your sport to always support you, because in the blink of an eye it could be forever changed.
 God Bless,
   Lauren :)

It's can be a Lose-Lose, or you can make it a win-win!

If you are a big sports fan, or quite frankly, a sports fan at all, you will be entertaining yourself with three and a half hours of NFL sacks, passes, tackles, and INT's in February as the Super Bowl overtakes your television. I personally am a College football, NBA watcher, more than College basketball, NFL fan. Nevertheless, like all other football obsessors, when the Super Bowl came on, I was watching like thousands upon thousands of others.
This year didn't affect me much. I am not a fan of Mr. Ben, the well-known (for many reasons) QB at the Steelers, or well-informed on the standings and stat's of Mr. Aaron, the QB at the new Super Bowl champions of the Green Bay Packers. Not only have I not been following much NFL ball because I had been so consumed with my two teams, UNA and Alabama, but I didn't care much for the two that would be battling it out for the Super Bowl Championship. I also must add, the little support I ever possessed for the packers was in fourth grade at ten years old when a boy in my class thought he was their number one fan, and being as I thought I was the number one fan of this boy's, I became the number two fan of the packers..... For a week or so as the crush lasted ;) I was also interested in this team during Mr. Brett's reign as QB, but now that he has moved on and apparently became much WELL known in other aspects, (falling in line with Mr. Ben) I have lost a little interest in his skills on the field.
I decided that after the packers scored the second time, I would turn off the television and my roommate and I would go to the movies and watch the movie "The Roommate".. Ironic, huh? (This post by no means is a movie review, but I would not recommend anyone see it, a waste of time and money!!)
As I am reaching my point.... I tune into CNN.com to give myself an idea for this blog and the headline story is dedicated to the Packer's winning the Super Bowl, and the picture locked in with the  article is Mr. Aaron holding his trophy proudly. I quickly ask myself two things. One, with all the turmoil, problems and issues in the world, it's so interesting how sports still go on, and not just that, but they are making headline news. I also ask myself, why is the QB always the person we reference to a team, or two a team's victory or defeat?
To answer my two questions, I looked back on my weekend experience at an FCA retreat.  Regardless of what is going on in the world, I do believe that athletics and sporting events will still be receiving checks. They are the radio to today as it was in the beginning. They are people's home away from home, something that they can focus on and drift of for a little while to get their minds off their  worries and stress. Sports are people's passion, obsession, past-time. They give people excitement, love and joy. Regardless of how big of a fan you are, the Super Bowl, National Championship, March Madness, the World Series, etc. are things athletes and sports lovers tune into to get their fix. That is why sports news are headlines, because they do make an impact on people.
Secondly, to my comment about QB's. I got to spend a weekend getting to know many athletes across the state at an FCA retreat. While there, I was able to sit and chat (on several occasions) with UNA's starting QB. You know, regardless if you are aware, they have a LOT of stress resting heavily on their shoulders. They are responsible for being leaders on and off the field. They control the team's offense, the pace of the game, the team's image. They are like the offensive Coordinator and Head Coach's little intern, running around, doing the will of his boss. It is a difficult job. Many people say the team is based on how good of a QB they have, and a lot of the time I agree. When I think about a team, whether or not I like them or think they are successful, I think about how well the QB plays and what his stats are.
So even though Sports have began to consume the way things are, and the norm of everyday life, don't think that you have to put your life aside to follow them, they are after all, just a game. But also, don't think that they aren't news, because "new" is news ... and crowning a new Super Bowl Champ is definitely new! Don't base a team solely on the QB, look at all the players, but do not think that a team can be successful with a successor, every team needs a leader. I want to thank all of UNA's leaders on and off the field, but especially our QB for stepping up and demonstrating what a true success story reads. :)

Be the change you want to see in the World :)

For all of you who are following the news updates in Egypt, I am in complete fear, wondering how a country can become so out of control in a matter of eight days. In all the video’s I have watched I hear the same words being used-all said towards Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak's, and these words are “Get out!”

It seems as if an angry crowd is gathering in the streets, causing many different problems and issues and all they are seeking is for the man who has been leading their country for 30 years to step down and let someone else take over, we would give into the group in order to prevent further turmoil.

I’m not one to say, “Give into the bully” but this instance is different.  This country that has seemed to stay off the radar for major troubles is currently over taking the news and is all we are hearing about. I believe the only way to fix this chaos would be for the President to resign. It seems that the issues would minimize quickly and things would go back to normal if the President listened to the will of the people. I hear of the people who are dying on the streets by being beaten to death, buildings burning, people asking for help, change. Why can’t the President just give them their wishes? I have viewed the videos of his work for Egypt. Apparently, he has won three elections, however, by law, no other name is allowed to be on the ballet. Recently when the next closest vote receiver tried to object and have a recount, he was arrested and sentenced to five years of hard labor. Sounds a little fishy? I think so.

How would you handle this situation if you were a protestor in Egypt? What would you do to see that President Mubarak was removed from office, or keep him in office?

God Bless,

   Lauren

I will follow you, follow you wherever you may go??

When you listen to a song, watch a movie, or a sporting event, there is always going to be a distinctive point, play, lyric ,that will stick out to you. As an assignment for my media convergence class, I'm responsible for listening to pod casts outside of class. My problem with this is, I usually just take one big situation or topic to heart and it stays with me, but not so much everything else. I'm not saying I overlook the rest or ignore it, but most of the time only 10% of the talk show stays on my mind.
After listening to the newest version of Slate's hang-up and listen Sport's podcast, I was able to take hold of their opinions not just on some particular football teams and players, but also NBA and baseball teams.  What I took from this podcast was a point they made about having super teams. If you think about, we truly do not have any teams that are consumed with the top athletes in their sport.  Sure we have the Miami Heat considered to be a super team, and others will label different NBA teams to have those same characteristics. However honestly, looking at Football teams -(NFL) - what would you think about combining big names all to one team? They discuss this because they refer to it being more as a business deal. Nevertheless, I wonder, what would teams do if they realized they were playing one team that was unbeatable because they possessed the best of the best. How intimidating would it be to have all the biggest names wearing the same jerseys? I also think about the money that would be made while people purchased tickets to see this team, merchandise to support it, and so on. Would people change their favorite teams if their teams leaders changed teams? I look at it like this, if Kevin Garnett left the Boston Celtics, I would not love the Boston Celtics like I do.
On a college level, it would be incredibly different for me. Alabama has my heart and soul. If we lost a big name player, I would still cheer for Alabama. I believe that is the difference in collegiate and national sports. I still fear though, that our "teams" would no longer be ours if we lost our favorite athletes. Let's be honest, we ALL loved the Bulls when MJ was there, but who still cares as much for them now? Yeahhhh..... that's what I was thinking...
What do you think? Will you change your mind?

Facebook, Twitter, gone? What would be your reaction?

The stories are circling about Egypt banning social networking. How would you feel if the Government told you that you were no longer allowed to access any social networks, or the Internet for that matter?
Facebook has become the norm in America. It is something we visit often in order to update people on our lives and stay in tune with friends who may be close to us, or far away, family at home or over sea's, and also make new friends. Even though people can choose to use facebook and other social networks for negative reasons, most choose to use it to stay in tune with what is going on. As for Egypt, they are banning this liberty.
What is your opinion on this? Should the government be allowed to take away this technology? What do you think they are choosing to ban it?
   God Bless,
  Lauren :)

Sports Talk- players and interviews :)

I listened to one of my first sports casts, well I guess it is referred to as a pod cast being as it is online. This interesting little talk show is entitled "Slate's Hang Up and Listen".  They were discussing the players in the NFL and teams such as the Patriots and Steelers. This show features Josh Levin and sports reporter Mike Pesca.
Stefan Fatsis is also featured as a writer and commentates on occasion.
They begin to give their opinion on Jay Cutler for the Bears. They talk about this because an ESPN reporter, Rick Riley, did a story previously on the player and attempted to get Cutler to open up and give a good story. Riley said he was stand-offish and simply had a bad attitude. He said we form opinions on athletes in the way they hold themselves on the field, but not just that, also off the field. And the sports commentators on the show had also taken on the opinion that this player is rude off the field.
Of course, no player is expected to like a sports journalist, but he should be able to respect a journalist enough to give them a few minutes of their time to get a story done. It seems like a player would want their name in the paper with encouraging, positive words behind their name.
They also discuss the opinion on the reasons behind players wanting the work with other athletes. "I think leadership matters, but I ask the question, do we deem a person a leader just because they are good." This part of the sports cast was not only creative, but a great point to hit! Just because a player might be the best on the field or court does not make him or her the team leader, you become a leader through your example, and whether or not you can lead your team by make tough game decisions and deal with game pressure. I say game pressure because you are able to keep composed-and that is for the team, not just the player's good name. Because often, people relate a team to a player- and when one player messes up or makes a poor decision it is related to that team as a whole. So I ask....
What do you think makes a great leader? Their skills or their leadership?
God Bless,
   Lauren

Don't ask God to guide your footsteps, if you're not willing to move.

When we are young,  you start creating goals for yourself, ambitions that you think that after you work hard and stay after that dream-you can eventually get there. When I was little, I was just like everyone else, I wanted to be a doctor, a vet, a teacher.  I didn't have my mind made up because I had my whole life ahead of me to decide what I wanted to do. Things change though. People change. Something that stayed the same though was my summer plans. Besides going to  basketball and cheerleading camps, I always went to Camp Chula Vista- A church of God camp in Pell City. When I was thirteen I was able to go to my first teen camp and I was beyond excited. My excitement quickly became a terror when our mess hall's deck collapsed while waiting for lunch on the second day of camp. Several campers were injured and sadly we all knew that Camp Chula Vista would never be the same. I say that for two reasons- one because of the camp deck and two because of the speaker who would impact my life greatly.
Pastor Brandon was leading Camp that week, and it was a first of many  being as he was a prophet of Jesus's, and I had never experienced that. Tuesday night, the day of the deck collapse, he picked myself and a good friend of mine who also studies at UNA out of the crowd and prophesied over our lives. In that moment, I was completely changed because God had revealed to me my purpose in the world. I was still a little girl, but showed me that this little girl could make a difference if I followed his will for my life. Pastor Brandon told me that I would be a journalist-because I will be incorporating something that I love, writing, in with my job. He also told me that I will be affecting change and be known all over the world. At thirteen, you can imagine the emotions I felt. I was scared, excited, nervous., but most of all ready. I was ready to fulfill God's will. I wanted to start that day.
I tell you all of this to say that I soon sought out all opportunities to get me where Pastor Brandon said I would be. I went to a Journalism Day at Auburn my Junior year (And I'm a die-hard Alabama fan.) I was selected to go to Japan, Girl's State, and lucked out with several awards at Falkville.  I also had little things come up that showed me I was on the right path in following God's plan. I made sure to keep my grades up in hope of getting scholarships all while playing four sports. I ended up graduating Salutatorian. So in high school, everything paid off. I chose to come to UNA because of the scholarship they offered me. Since I've been at UNA I have been inducted in two honor societies, worked for the Flor-Ala, The Times Daily, Interned at Rick and Bubba, broadcasted with JD Byars and the UNA Lions Sports Network, and work for FCA of North Alabama.
Having said all of this to tell you that the work is worth it. It is a long journey to ever achieve a goal, whether it is small like a A on a test, bigger like an A in a class, or huge like being a sideline reporter for ESPN, you have to sweat to see the results. I don't just mean that metaphorically. Michael Jordan, "I'm not out there sweating for three hours just to see what it is like to sweat." You have to put in the effort, the work to see the results. I encourage everyone to seek what they are good at, and go after being the best at it. God gives everyone talents for a reason. He wants you to use them for the gain of his glory!
Follow your dreams, set high goals and go after them with your whole heart. The results will come if you put in the effort :).
"I learned that the only way you are going to get anywhere in life is to work hard at it. Whether you're a musician, a writer, an athlete or a businessman, there is no getting around it. If you do, you'll win-if you don't you won't."- Bruce Jenner.
