Alcohol and energy drinks... not a great mix.

This is not the easiest subject for me to blog about being as I personally do not drink therefore I have a pre-meditated bias against the topic, nevertheless, it still needs to be heard.
People have been hearing lately about the "Four Loco's" drinks that combine energy drinks and alcohol, and they have been causing problems, especially among college age students nationwide. Slowly, but surely, they are being banned from states, but apparently not quick enough. There have been many deaths from this drink, and also others.
A popular way to also consume alcohol is adding red bull, or a different energy drink of that sort and recently a study has been done to see the difference in people just drinking alcohol and those who also add energy drinks to their beverage.
The study shows that people have enough less control when the "problematic" caffeine is added to their already control ceasing drink. People are overindulging because the caffeine makes them not feel buzzed but confused and over stimulated. They lose sight of what is going on quicker and have a less grasp on what is going on and how much they are in fact drinking.
I think its hard enough for people to drink, but now adding caffeine to alcohol is adding a problem to a problem.
God bless,
Lauren

Tested positive and sudden retirement? Hmmm..

One of the only players in MLB history to fail three drug tests is none other than Manny Ramirez. Star athlete and baseball player who made his debut in 1993 and will forever be in the record books decided to retire this week rather than facing a 100 game suspension.
To quote Slate, "What did Ramirez waste? He was a superb hitter for a long, long time. He retires with 2,574 hits, 1,544 runs, and 555 home-runs. He led the Cleveland Indians to two pennants and the Boston Red Sox to two world championships. He played till he was 38 years old."
He was impressive, he was forceful, and he was determined; He was also  a cheater. To be successful in sports, you have to win fairly. Steroids, or any other type of drug that makes you be someone that you are not is ILLEGAL. If you want to win, develop a strong work ethic, stay longer, sweat more, play harder, don't inject or consume your way to the top by taking this MESS that will not only hurt you in the long run, but demolish your chances of ever truly becoming great, because if you cheat, you will be caught.
He made a stupid decision and he was found out, just like in life, if you try to hide something, you to will be found out. Karma is always there to find what you had done.
Slate said it, he was successful and he was excellent at his sport. Nevertheless, when you think about him in twenty years, you may remember his statistics in baseball, but first you will recall this mistake that ended his career. To read more on the story, check out the following links:

Should college athletes be paid to pay?

This week's Slate's Hang-up and Listens podcast performance went into depth about the ugly win of UConn over Butler. They actually hit the points that this was the worst Field goal percentage of shooting in Final Four history. It went from 8/48 and on shooting inside the three-point line. There were more blocks on peremiter shots then Butler has had to suffer all season. Matt Howard was being talked up a ton by ESPN staff, and he only appeared "okay", nothing impressive.
Both teams went 10/44 in 3-point range, that's 22%, and again, not impressive, at all.
After venturing away from the game, they hit on the point of college athletes recieving monetary compensation for their abilities on the court/field/etc. I personally do not think that college athletes should be paid. Even though playing a sport in college is a job, they are not a professional yet, that is a whole different level. If they are recieving scholarship money, housing, etc. then they are being compensated.
  What do you think?
  God Bless,
 Lauren
